History

In 1977, a general meeting was convened on 31st March at the Lakshminath Bezbarua Sangha to hold much anticipated Rangali Bihu Sanmilan in Barpeta Road town. The meeting also elected the then Chairman of Barpeta Road Municipality Amulya Biswas as President, senior citizen Niranjan Das (Janbabu) as Vice-President, Chanmohan Das as Secretary and Banmali Pathak as Assistant Secretary, Babulal Mour as Treasurer and Abdul Mannan, Dharanidhar Talukdar and Nakul Das 16-member Bihu committee was formed with members of Rabindra Saha, Bhagwan Das, Thakur Das, Abhinandan Brahma, Kabin Chandra Das, Shambhu Das and Paresh Chandra Das. The meeting also prepared a budget of Rs. 5,500 to cover all the possible expenses of the Bihu Sanmilan and to prepare a two-day program for the Bihu Sanmilan on April 23 and 24 to arrange by invited artists. The venue for the Bihu Sanmilan was fixed at Barpeta Road Police Station Maidan. Today, the square is a police quarter. In due course, work began on the preparation of the Robha and stage at the Police Square.

In 23 April 1977, The flag of the Rangali Bihu Sanmilan was hoisted for the first time in the heart of Barpeta Road at 8 am. The flag was hoisted by the Vice-President Niranjan Das (Janbabu) of the Bihu Committee. Amulya Biswas, the president was unable to hoist the flag due to the death of his father the day before the Sanmilan. There was a group Bihu dance competition and a cultural program featuring local artists from 6 pm. This local cultural festival made a deep impression on the people of Barpeta Road. The organizers of the Bihu Committee proved that an orderly, beautiful and healthy cultural festival can be held with the participation of local artists. The second day of the Bihu Sanmilan (24 April), A meeting was chaired by Professor Dr. Maheshwar Neog, Head, Department of Assamese, University of Guwahati. The meeting was attended by Dr. Nirmal Prabha Bardoloi, a renowned writer and professor and film actor Kamal Narayan Chowdhury as the chief guest. The event was opened by the Bihu Huchori Dal of Rupjyoti Shilpi Sangha of Guwahati at 7 pm. For the first time, the locals of Barpeta Road felt blessed to enjoy the real Bihu dance and Bihu Huchori together. Singer Bahidur Rahman, modern singer Surya Das, Hasina Hazarika, Mahananda Majinda Barua, Neelima Khatun, folk singer Snehalata Das, Bhatiali singer Ashok Roy and comedian Lakshinandan Majumder made the historic cultural event that night beautiful.

The Experience

In 1977, the sun rose in the eastern sky of Barpeta Road and still shines. Everyone needs careful attention and boundless workforce to ensure that this light does not fade. This year the people of greater Barpeta Road are going to celebrate its Golden Jublee Year (1977 to 2026). So, a Committee is formed for observation of this event laid by Rajesh Sarkar as President, Giridhari Das as Working President, Himangshu Bharali and Kulen Choudhury as General Secretary. This event is proposed to be held on 14th April to 20th April, 2026 at Barpeta Road Stadium. Again 20 nos sub-committee are also formed for celebrating this event.
